The Extraordinary Ordinary 365
What if they're sitting quietly around the corner from your home? As photographers, we're constantly shown breathtaking destinations and bucket-list locations. Social media is filled with incredible landscapes, iconic landmarks, and dream adventures that can leave us believing that amazing photographs only happen in extraordinary places. I don't believe that's true... Over the years, I've discovered that some of my favourite images have come from places most people would simply walk past. A rusty gate. A patch of light on an old wall. A weathered tree. A puddle after rain. The textures of peeling paint. The way morning light falls across an ordinary suburban street. Beauty isn't rare. Sometimes we just need to slow down long enough to notice it. That's why I'm launching The Extraordinary Ordinary 365. For the next 365 days, I'll be setting myself a challenge: to create one photograph every single day, inspired by a daily prompt. Every image will begin with the same question: Can I find something extraordinary in an ordinary place? Some days I'll wander local streets. Other days I'll explore parks, beaches, laneways, country roads, shopping precincts, or places that most people wouldn't think twice about. There won't always be dramatic landscapes or perfect conditions. In fact, many days the location may seem completely uninspiring. That's exactly the point. This project isn't about finding spectacular places. It's about learning to see. Along the way every few days I'll be filming the entire process for YouTube - from arriving at the location and working through ideas, to experimenting with compositions, overcoming creative blocks, editing the final image, and sharing the finished photograph. Some days I'll succeed. Some days I might struggle. Some days I may completely change direction. And that's all part of the creative process. My hope is that this series inspires photographers of every level to pick up their camera more often, look at familiar places with fresh eyes, and realise that creativity doesn't begin with a passport - it begins with curiosity. Whether you shoot with a professional camera, a drone, or simply your phone, this challenge is one that anyone can join. I'd love for you to come along for the journey. Better still, why not join me if you want? Use the daily prompts as inspiration and share your own interpretation. Every photographer sees the world differently, and that's what makes photography so special. So here's to a year of slowing down, looking closer, embracing creativity, and discovering that extraordinary photographs can be made almost anywhere. Welcome to The Extraordinary Ordinary 365. Let's see what we can find.
